MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122097 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 4, 2025, for 'deep learning-based smart waste segregation system employing yolov11.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Anand Bihari; Harsh Vinayak Sangrulkar; and Sudharma Warune.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides an intelligent waste segregation system comprising an object detection model trained on waste images to classify waste items into multiple categories, an image processing module configured to receive and prepare input images for analysis, a prediction engine configured to process images through the object detection model to generate classification results, and an output module configured to provide results. The system includes a user interface connected to a camera that captures visual data flowing to a preprocessing module. Preprocessed data flows to a YOLO model that generates bounding boxes distributed to analysis and decision making modules communicating with an API component. Categories comprise cardboard, glass, metal, paper, plastic, and trash, with inference times of 20-25 milliseconds for real-time operation."
