MUMBAI, India, Nov. 21 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202421083352 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology, Maharashtra, on Oct. 30, 2024, for 'corrosion protection of embedded steel reinforcement in concrete with constructed wetland integrated microbial fuel cell.'
Inventor(s) include Rohan Kumar; and Prof. Prakash Nanthagopalan.
The application for the patent was published on Nov. 21, under issue no. 47/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "According to the present disclosure, a constructed wetland microbial fuel cell (CF-MFC) system and a method for preventing corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete structures is disclosed. The system (1000) comprises a CF-MFC (105) and an energy storage unit (110) connected with the CF-MFC (105) at one end and coupled with a rebar in a reinforced concrete (115) and an anode (120) at the other end. The CW-MFC (105) comprises a container (200) comprising a lower filter layer (210) and an upper filter layer (225), a plurality of anodes (215a, 215b, 215c) positioned above the upper filter layer (225) in the container (200), at least one cathode (220) mounted above the plurality of anodes (215a, 215b, 215c) in the container (200) and at least one separating layer (240) disposed between the plurality of anodes (215a, 215b, 215c) and the at least one cathode (220) in the container (200)."
