MUMBAI, India, June 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202517047345 A) filed by Gates Corporation, Denver, U.S.A., on May 16, for 'continuously variable transmission for a bicycle.'

Inventor(s) include De La Torre, Patricio; Dec, Andrzej; Hao, Minchun; Rieland, David P; and Cadarette, Marc.

The application for the patent was published on June 6, under issue no. 23/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A continuously variable transmission for a bicycle is provided that improves the functionality of the bicycle and increases the reliability and longevity of the transmission. The transmission is continuously variable among a potentially infinite number of speed ratios allowing a user to select the proper speed ratio based on the operating conditions, the motion of the bicycle, and any other considerations from the user. A driver assembly reduces the torque from a crankshaft to a set of sheaves and a belt to improve the reliability and longevity of the components of the transmission that set the speed ratio. Moreover, a position motor simply and precisely controls the speed ratio by controlling the relative positioning between sheaves. A driven assembly increases torque for output to a drive wheel, which propels the bicycle."

The patent application was internationally filed on Oct. 31, 2023, under International application No.PCT/US2023/078279.
