MUMBAI, India, Aug. 8 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202441006701 A) filed by Ashok Leyland Limited, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Feb. 1, 2024, for 'common auxiliary drive unit having auxiliary motor for driving auxiliary devices of electric vehicle.'

Inventor(s) include Aakash Collin; Parthiban S; Karthick G; M. Gopi Sankar; Senthil Kumar M; and Dr. K. Subramanian.

The application for the patent was published on Aug. 8, under issue no. 32/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A common auxiliary drive unit (50) for an electric vehicle, comprising an auxiliary motor (60) connected to a plurality of auxiliary device (28, 34, 42, 52, 64) each having a pulley placed in a common housing (72) at suitable distance from each other and driven by a mechanical drive element (66). A single auxiliary inverter (75) connected to the auxiliary motor (60) provides electrical power from a power distribution board (25) of the electric vehicle to drive the auxiliary motor (60). An alternator (52) connected to the auxiliary motor (60) running at full battery voltage provides a DC output at lower voltage for a plurality of low voltage loads (40). An e-clutch (67) individually attached to each auxiliary device (28, 34, 42, 52, 64) controls engagement and disengagement of the auxiliary device (28, 34, 42, 52, 64) with respect to the motor (60). An idler (45) guides the mechanical drive element (66) and maintains alignment around the pulley and a tensioner (56) applies and adjusts tension of the mechanical drive element (66) to prevent slippage for smooth operation. A power output of each auxiliary device (28, 34, 42, 52, 64) is measured and summed up to determine size of the auxiliary motor (60) that drives the auxiliary device (28, 34, 42, 52, 64) via the mechanical drive element (66)."
