MUMBAI, India, Oct. 11 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202444035437 A) filed by Karpagam College Of Engineering, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on May 4, 2024, for 'coal ash, foundry sand and plastic in concrete.'

Inventor(s) include B. T. Ushapriya; S. Akash; J. Bhubhesh Dharmendra; B. Hari; and A. Kaleeswaren.

The application for the patent was published on Oct. 10, under issue no. 41/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Concrete is the important constituent in constructing a building. Bricks is also a most important material in buildings. Due to their importance in construction, lot of research has been carried out improve their performance and replaced material content to experiment their strength and reducing of emissions. Now a days concrete is also established in bricks and blocks. In order to increasing of concrete blocks as a replacement of conventional bricks which leads to carbon emission in buildings. Even though it gives better strength but increases on concrete specimen which leads to effecting in environment. In our project carries to reduce carbon emission in concrete without disturbing their strengths, we had replaced their material content gradually to attain strength and less emission. Coal Ash (Boiler Ash) is replaced in Cement content, Foundry Sand is replaced in Fine aggregate and Plastic is replaced overall percentage of concrete block. A Conventional Concrete Block are also casted to check and compare their physical activities and strength. The percentage had taken in our project is 15% and 25% of their certain content. Plastic is alone replaced as 15% and 25% of their whole concrete content. The compressive strength test, water absorption test and heat absorption test are carried out for the conventional and Coal ash concrete. The test results are compared and it has been found that addition of Coal ash concrete up to 0.4% gives better test results when compared to conventional concrete."
