MUMBAI, India, April 20 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202617004108 A) filed by Ucl Business Ltd.; and Birkbeck, University Of London, London, on Jan. 15, for 'carbazole compounds and their use in therapy, in the treatment of a respiratory infection.'

The application for the patent was published on April 17, under issue no. 16/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to compounds of formula (I), or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or solvate thereof, (I) wherein: one of R2 and R3 is H, and the other is (CRaRb)nY; Y is selected from CO2Rc, CN and CONReRf; R4 is selected from H, halo, CN, alkyl and alkoxy; R6 is selected from H, F, Br, I, COOH, CN, CORd, CO2Rd, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy, haloalkoxy, nitro, OH, SRd, SORd, SO2Rd, SO2NRdRd, NHSO2Rd, an aryl group and a heteroaryl group, wherein said aryl or heteroaryl group is optionally substituted by one or more substituents selected from alkyl, alkoxy, halo, haloalkyl and haloalkoxy; R7 is selected from H, halo, alkyl, and alkoxy; R9 is selected from H, CORd, alkyl, haloalkyl, aryl, CO-aryl, CO-haloaryl, aralkyl and haloaralkyl; R1, R5 and R8 are H; each Ra, Rb, Rc, Rd, Re and Rf is independently selected from H, alkyl and haloalkyl; n is 1 to 6; for use in the treatment or prevention of a mycobacterial infection. Further aspects of the invention relate to a subgroup of compounds of formula (Ia), pharmaceutical compositions comprising the same, and their use in the treatment or prevention of a mycobacterial infection."
