MUMBAI, India, Feb. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541124433 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 10, 2025, for 'bronchoscopy under non-invasive ventilation: a novel approach using a modified mask.'
Inventor(s) include Easwaran Nampoothiri; Anbumaran Parivakkam Mani; and Deepak Nallaswamy Veeraiyan.
The application for the patent was published on Feb. 13, under issue no. 07/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "This invention describes a modified non-invasive ventilation (NIV) mask system designed to facilitate safe bronchoscopy without interrupting ventilatory support. The device integrates a cylindrical attachment with a dedicated bronchoscope access channel and a leak-proof seal, allowing seamless insertion and manoeuvr ability of bronchoscopes while maintaining positive airway pressure. Multiple embodiments are possible, including single-port, dual-port, detachable, and rotating designs, with optional auxiliary channels for suction, drug delivery, or oxygen insufflation. The leak-proof diaphragm or valve ensures minimal air leakage, enhancing patient safety and infection control. During use, the mask is secured to the patient, the bronchoscope is inserted through the seal, and procedures such as inspection, BAL, or biopsy can be performed continuously under NIV. This innovation overcomes limitations of conventional masks, reduces desaturation risk, and expands the feasibility of bronchoscopy in critically ill patients requiring non-invasive ventilatory support."
