MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122864 A) filed by Meenakshi Academy Of Higher Education and Research; and Meenakshi Ammal Dental College And Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 5, 2025, for 'biopsy punch with integrated illumination for enhanced surgical visibility.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. R. J. Vijayashree; Dr. R. Jeyaseelan; and Dr. Deepanjali M.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a biopsy punch integrated with a built-in illumination system for enhanced visibility during tissue excision in anatomically constrained or poorly lit regions. The device comprises a pair of elongated arms pivotally connected to form a forceps-like structure, terminating in looped handles at one end and a cutting head at the opposite end. A miniaturized illumination source, preferably a micro-LED, is embedded within the cutting head and oriented to project focused light directly onto the tissue-contacting surface. A tactile micro-switch positioned adjacent to the illumination source enables selective activation, while a rechargeable power unit housed within the elongated arms supplies power to the illumination system. A charging port, such as a micro-USB connector, is provided at the handle for convenient recharging. The cutting head may be detachable and disposable. The integrated illumination improves surgical accuracy, enhances visualization, and eliminates reliance on external light sources."
