MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541120534 A) filed by Nandha Engineering College, Erode, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 2, 2025, for 'bio degradable seed capsule containing biochar and vermicompost nutrient matrix for enhanced germination.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. K. K. Suvain; S. M. Vinodhini; V. Hemadharshini; J. Maria Mirza; and G. Priyanga.
The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a Biodegradable Seed Delivery Apparatus designed for enhanced germination and accelerated early seedling vigor. The apparatus comprises a unitary, rapid-dissolving biodegradable capsule shell (2), preferably made of Gelatin, enclosing at least one agricultural seed (1). The novelty of the invention resides in a precisely formulated localized nutrient matrix (3) contained within the shell and surrounding the seed. This matrix is a synergistic mixture of vermicompost and biochar. The vermicompost provides immediate, highly bioavailable organic nutrients, essential microbes, and plant growth regulators necessary to initiate rapid seedling development. The biochar, with its high porosity and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), acts as a critical stabilizer, serving two primary functions: first, it provides exceptional moisture retention to prevent desiccation during the critical seed imbibition and germination phase; and second, it effectively prevents the leaching of high-value nutrients from the vermicompost. The nutrient matrix is formulated at an optimal ratio of 70% vermicompost to 30% biochar (by volume or mass). Furthermore, the matrix is preferably configured as a compacted, cohesive pelletized mass to ensure the sustained integrity of the localized micro-environment after the shell dissolves. Upon planting, the biodegradable shell dissolves in soil moisture, releasing the seed directly into the stabilized, slow-release nutrient matrix. This system overcomes the limitations of traditional seeding by providing a self-contained, precision-dosed unit that ensures the seed has consistent access to optimal moisture and sustained nutrition, resulting in significantly improved germination success and robust, vigorous seedlings ready for continued growth."
