MUMBAI, India, April 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631042649 A) filed by Jis College Of Engineering, Kalyani, West Bengal, on April 2, for 'autonomous underwater surveillance drone with integrated sonar and ai-based threat detection for naval security.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Shyam Sundar Santra; Mr. Prodipto Dhali; Mr. Shubhankar Karmakar; Dr. Debasish Majumder; Sandip Maitra; Sayan Ghosh; Sanchayan Biswas; and Shaikh Taufik Uddin.

The application for the patent was published on April 17, under issue no. 16/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to an Autonomous Underwater Surveillance Drone (AUSD) designed for naval and maritime security applications requiring continuous underwater monitoring and real-time threat detection. The system comprises a pressure-resistant autonomous underwater vehicle equipped with a multi-layer sonar sensing suite including multibeam imaging sonar, side-scan sonar, diver detection sonar, and passive acoustic sensors for detecting underwater objects and acoustic signatures. An onboard artificial intelligence (AI) processing module analyzes sonar and acoustic data in real time using machine learning algorithms to classify anomalies and identify potential threats such as unauthorized divers, underwater drones, mines, and suspicious submerged objects. The drone further incorporates SLAM-based autonomous navigation supported by inertial and depth sensors to enable precise localization and mapping in GPS-denied underwater environments. A secure communication framework is provided through an acoustic modem linked to a surface buoy relay capable of transmitting encrypted surveillance data and threat alerts via RF or satellite to remote command centers. The system additionally includes an autonomous docking and inductive recharging station for extended mission endurance and uninterrupted patrol operations. The invention provides a scalable, intelligent, and energy-efficient underwater surveillance solution for coastal defense, harbor security, offshore infrastructure protection, and maritime situational awareness."
