MUMBAI, India, April 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641043382 A) filed by Mangalam College Of Engineering, Ettumanoor, Kerala, on April 5, for 'aqua sentinel autonomous oil spill detection and cleanup system.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Abraham C. G; Ms. Meera Boban; Ms. Mariya Stephen; Emil Paul Shaji; Sravan K S; Sreshtta Miriyam Kochumon; Ann Merin Mathew; Alphy Eliza Jose; Mr. Vignesh Raja; and Ms. Archa K Manoj.

The application for the patent was published on April 17, under issue no. 16/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Oil spills significantly impact marine ecosystems by reducing oxygen transfer, affecting aquatic life, and disrupting water-based activities. The present invention introduces an autonomous floating robotic system designed for real-time oil spill detection, identification, and cleanup. The system integrates an oil sensing mechanism with a drum skimmer unit to continuously collect and separate oil from the water surface, storing it in an onboard tank for safe disposal. Environmental monitoring is enhanced through sensors measuring temperature and turbidity, providing insight into water quality conditions. A conductivity-based sensing approach enables identification of oil types, supporting effective response strategies. The system incorporates an Internet of Things communication framework for transmitting real-time data and alerts to a remote interface. Safety features such as overflow detection ensure reliable operation during extended use. The proposed solution offers a cost-effective, autonomous, and scalable approach for monitoring and cleaning oil contamination in diverse water environments."
