MUMBAI, India, Feb. 6 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641006862 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on Jan. 23, for 'apparatus and method for waste recycling and segregation using machine learning.'

Inventor(s) include Jerome Vasanth; Praveen Kumar; and Avadhesh Kumar Sharma.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 6, under issue no. 06/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides an apparatus (100) for waste recycling and segregation using machine learning. The apparatus (100) includes a hopper (102) that directs mixed waste onto a conveyor (104). A segregation chamber (106-1) is coupled to the hopper (102) to receive and segregate the mixed waste. A horizontal crusher (108) is coupled to the chamber (106-1) to crush the segregated waste. A magnetic separator (110) disposed with the horizontal crusher (108) extracts metals from the crushed waste. A density-based segregation system (114) is coupled downstream of the magnetic separator (110) to separate waste materials of varying densities. A heating chamber (118) follows the segregation system (114) to remove moisture from the waste materials of a specific density. A waste segregation system (114-1) positioned downstream of the heating chamber (118) employs sensor units and a processor (130) to identify and sort hazardous waste materials using a machine-learning engine."
