MUMBAI, India, Dec. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202511025619 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, on March 20, for 'an integrated system and method for desalination and refrigeration operable with low-grade thermal energy.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. Arun Kumar R; Chander Veer; Dr. Hardik Kothadia; and Anoop S L.
The application for the patent was published on Dec. 12, under issue no. 50/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "An integrated system for desalination and refrigeration operable with low-grade thermal energy is disclosed. The system comprises an ejector unit with a primary inlet to receive steam from a low-grade thermal energy source and a secondary inlet to entrain refrigerant vapor from a refrigeration cycle. The ejector unit includes mixing section to form a steam-refrigerant mixture and a diffuser section to recover pressure. A desalination unit comprises a shell-and-tube evaporator with a tube-side inlet receiving the steam-refrigerant mixture and shell-side inlet receiving saline feedwater, wherein condensation of the steam component releases latent heat to partially vaporize the feedwater, producing desalination vapor and concentrated brine. A desalination condenser condenses the desalination vapor to provide distilled water and preheat incoming feedwater. A refrigeration unit comprises a phase separator, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator arranged in a closed loop to deliver refrigeration output, with refrigerant vapor recirculated through the ejector unit."
