MUMBAI, India, Sept. 12 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411013314 A) filed by National Institute Of Pharmaceutical Education And Research, Mohali, Punjab, on Feb. 23, 2024, for 'an improved synthetic process for 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)urea(bcu), a key intermediate in carmustine synthesis.'

The application for the patent was published on Sept. 12, under issue no. 37/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention provides a process for preparation of 1,3-bis (2-chloroethyl) urea (BCU) having formula (I) which is a key intermediate in the synthesis of Carmustine that is an anticancer drug. The present invention provides a single step, one-pot process for preparing BCU which comprises, reaction of 2-chlorethylamine hydrochloride salt with diphenyl carbonate in the presence of potassium tert. Butoxide in a mixture of solvents ensuring an enhanced yield of 1,3-bis (2-chloroethyl) urea of formula (I). The process provides an easy and cost effective method for obtaining a higher yield of the final product."
