MUMBAI, India, Aug. 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202421014116 A) filed by Unichem Laboratories Ltd.; and Ipca Laboratories Ltd., Maharashtra, on Feb. 27, 2024, for 'an improved method for manufacturing of an intermediate, dibenzo[b,f][1,4]thiazepine-11 (10h)-one, of quetiapine.'

Inventor(s) include Gawas, Dnyaneshwar Vishnu; Khan, Afzal Yousuf; Sathe, Dhananjay Govind; and Bhattacharyya, Pabitrakumar Kalipada.

The application for the patent was published on Aug. 29, under issue no. 35/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention provides an improved method for manufacturing of Dibenzo[b,f][1,4]thiazepine-11(10H)-one which is used in the synthesis of quetiapine API. Said method is carried out by: (a) combining a compound of formula 1 with a compound of formula 2 in presence of a base in a solvent to obtain a compound of formula 3; (b) contacting the compound of formula 3 with a base in a solvent followed by an acid to obtain a compound of formula 4; and (c) contacting the compound of formula 4 with a reagent (monochlorobenzene) to obtain the compound of formula 5. The said method does not involve isolation of compound of formula 4 which is further reacted with reagent to get compound of formula 5, wherein the reagent acts as reagent as well as solvent."
