MUMBAI, India, March 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621010262 A) filed by Proheartz Electic Llp, Pune, Maharashtra, on Jan. 31, for 'an external pneumatic diaphragm assist device.'
Inventor(s) include Arun Ramkrishna Limaye.
The application for the patent was published on March 13, under issue no. 11/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A non-invasive external pneumatic diaphragm assist device (100) for use in intensive care units, characterised by a wearable abdominal belt/cuff assembly (101) encircling the patient's abdomen and waist and incorporating a single inflatable bladder (102) centrally mounted in an epigastric positioning zone (114) overlying the anatomical projection of the diaphragm. The inflatable bladder (102) is connected via flexible pneumatic tubing (112) to an electronic controller unit (104) housing an air pump/compressor (103), an inflation/deflation valve assembly (111), and an integrated pressure sensor (105). The controller (104) auto-drives rhythmic inflation and deflation cycles such that controlled deflation of the bladder permits descent of the diaphragm associated with enlargement of the thoracic cavity and generation of negative intrathoracic pressure to actively assist inhalation of ventilator-supplied oxygen/air, while controlled inflation compresses the abdominal region, elevates the diaphragm to assist exhalation, and simultaneously generates cyclic intra-abdominal pressure variations to mechanically stimulate abdominal viscera."
