MUMBAI, India, July 5 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202311084938 A) filed by Shoolini University Of Biotechnology And Management Sciences, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, on Dec. 13, 2023, for 'an ecofriendly method for preparing vinblastine.'

Inventor(s) include Aditya Banyal; Dr. Pradeep Kumar; and Dr. Sourabh Kulshrestha.

The application for the patent was published on July 4, under issue no. 27/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a method for the bioprocess development of vinblastine derived from endophytic microorganisms majorly Alternaria alternate isolated from Catharanthus roseus. Furthermore, the present invention involves isolation and screening of vinblastine-producing endophytic microorganisms, with subsequent fermentation of 18-distinct fungal strains, emphasizing the hyper-production of vinblastine by Alternaria alternata. Additionally, the characterization through HPLC highlights Alternaria alternata as the strain with the highest yield and the method achieves significant breakthroughs in vinblastine production (10.73 mg/L). Overall, this comprehensive and efficient approach addresses limitations in traditional extraction, offering a sustainable alternative with applications in the pharmaceutical industry."
