MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641041821 A) filed by Chennai Institute Of Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on April 1, for 'an antioxidant -stabilized lemongrass oil -diesel fuel composition for improved performance and reduced nox emissions in compression ignition engines.'

Inventor(s) include Dr, Sathiyamoorthi R; Dr. Vijayan R; Vinayagamoorthy M; Atchaya Kumar R; Krishna Kumar S; and Aswin K V.

The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The titled invention discloses an improved fuel composition and method for enhancing the performance and emission characteristics of a compression ignition (Cl) engine using a biofuel-diesel blend. The invention specifically discloses a diesel engine fuel formulation comprising a predetermined proportion of neat lemongrass oil blended with conventional diesel fuel and treated with selected antioxidant additives. Phenolic antioxidant compounds, namely butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), are incorporated at optimized concentrations to improve oxidation stability, combustion efficiency, and emission control. The proposed fuel composition effectively mitigates the inherent drawbacks of biofuel usage, such as poor oxidation stability and elevated nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions, without requiring any modification to the existing engine configuration. Experimental evaluation demonstrates that the antioxidant-treated lemongrass oil-diesel blend results in enhanced brake thermal efficiency, reduced specific fuel consumption, and lower exhaust gas temperature compared to untreated biofuel blends. A significant reduction in NOx emissions is achieved due to the free-radical quenching action of the antioxidants during combustion, while maintaining acceptable levels of carbon monoxide, unbumt hydrocarbons, and smoke emissions. The invention offers a costeffective, environmentally sustainable, and readily deployable alternative fuel solution suitable for agricultural, transportation, and power generation applications. The proposed formulation is particularly advantageous for rural and decentralized energy systems, as it enables direct utilization of plant-derived oils with improved fuel stability and engine compatibility. Overall, the invention contributes to reduced dependency on fossil fuels, lower exhaust emissions, and improved operational efficiency of diesel engines."
