MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541092876 A) filed by Dr Sumi Mary George, Ankamaly, Kerala, on Sept. 27, 2025, for 'an anti-fungal food packaging film and a method of preparation thereof.'
Inventor(s) include Dr Sherin Joy Parappilly; Dona V Idicula; and Dr Sumi Mary George.
The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "An Anti-fungal food packaging film and a method of preparation The present invention discloses a sustainable anti-fungal food packaging material, comprising (i) Polyvinyl alcohol (3wt %), (ii) ZnO nanoparticles (20 wt%) and methanolic extract of lactic acid bacteria (1.25 wt %) and a method of preparation thereof; where the bacterial extract is prepared using the consortium of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Limosilactobacillus fermentum (LABCON) mixed at 1:1 ratio. The nanocomposite film showed antifungal activity against aflatoxigenic Aspergillus flavus MTCC 2798. The addition of methanolic lactic acid bacterial consortium and ZnO nanoparticle with Polyvinyl alcohol, enhanced mechanical and hydrodynamic properties of the film simultaneously offering microbial barrier property and easy biodegradability in soil. Overall, the claimed composition of film serves as an ideal packaging material for food articles."
