MUMBAI, India, Jan. 23 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531134045 A) filed by Nist University, Berhampur, Orissa, on Dec. 31, 2025, for 'an access control system for a lock method of controlling access to a lock using knock interval authentication.'
Inventor(s) include Atanu Jana; S Sovan Kumar; Rohit Raj Padhi; Kunjabihari Swain; Palash Das; Priyadarsan Patra; and Sandipan Mallik.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 23, under issue no. 04/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to an offline access control system and method for controlling a lock using knock-based temporal authentication is disclosed. the system includes a vibration transducer configured to detect mechanical knock events on a protected surface and generate corresponding electrical signals. a processing module timestamps the detected knock events, computes successive inter-knock intervals to form a temporal signature, and compares the temporal signature against one of multiple reference temporal signatures stored in non-volatile memory using predefined per-interval tolerance ranges. a local user input interface with manually operable switches enables on-device enrollment of new temporal signatures, reset of stored credentials, and initiation of authentication without external programming or network connectivity. upon a successful match, a locking actuator interface actuates an electrically operable locking mechanism to permit access, while mismatches maintain the lock in a secured state. a real-time feedback interface provides visual and textual indications of system states including ready, pattern saved, access granted, and access denied. a low-power power subsystem supports unattended operation by placing system components in a sleep mode and waking the system via an interrupt from the vibration transducer. multiple user credentials persist across power cycles, enabling secure, multi-user, offline access control."
