MUMBAI, India, Nov. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202441036329 A) filed by Dr. Jayaram LN, Bengaluru, Karnataka, on May 8, 2024, for 'almond gum based edible gum composite films for food packaging, preservation and other applications.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Jayaram LN; Shivaani Mahenderkar; Megha S Chikkalli; and Shreyanth C K.

The application for the patent was published on Nov. 14, under issue no. 46/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a biodegradable and edible composite film designed for food packaging and preservation. This innovative film is primarily composed of almond gum and starch, blended in different proportions to achieve superior mechanical properties and enhanced preservation capability. Plasticizers such as glycerol and sorbitol are added to improve the film's flexibility and elasticity, while sodium alginate is incorporated to strengthen the film structure and reduce water absorption. The preparation process involves mixing almond gum and starch, casting the formulation onto a suitable surface, and air-drying it to form a thin, uniform film layer. The resulting film is not only effective in extending the shelf life of fruits and other perishable foods but also demonstrates excellent biodegradability when exposed to environmental conditions. With its non-toxic, eco-friendly composition, this composite film serves as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastic packaging materials, addressing growing environmental concerns related to plastic pollution."
