MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541123295 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 7, 2025, for 'ai-powered tuberculosis screening system for drug resistance detection.'

Inventor(s) include Biji C. L.; Aryan Agarwal; Aishika Maitra; Deshan Vijayvargiya; George Priya Doss; and Athira T.

The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure provides a system for automated classification of tuberculosis drug resistance from chest X-ray images. The system includes a data preprocessing module (FIG. 1) configured to receive chest X-ray images and apply image enhancement techniques to improve image quality and feature visibility, a deep learning classification module including at least one convolutional neural network trained to classify the chest X-ray images as drug-sensitive tuberculosis or drug-resistant tuberculosis based on radiographic features extracted from the preprocessed chest X-ray images, and an explainable artificial intelligence module (FIG. 6) configured to generate visual explanations of classification decisions by highlighting anatomical regions that contribute to diagnostic predictions. The system enables automated tuberculosis drug resistance detection in resource-limited settings where specialized radiological expertise may be limited."
