MUMBAI, India, Jan. 9 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541113050 A) filed by Kit-Kalaignar Karunanidhi Institute Of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Nov. 18, 2025, for 'ai-enhanced human-intention prediction and proximity safety system for manual and powered wheelchair.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The invention presents an Al-enabled proximity and human-intention prediction 5 system for wheelchairs using an ultrasonic unit (1), an infrared unit (2), a Time-of- Flight unit (3), and a vision module (4) arranged around the frame. A processing and inference unit (5) executes a fusion module (6) that forms a unified scene map. A safety-bubble generator (7) creates an adaptive protection zone based on movement density and user condition. Directional alerts are delivered through a light module (8), io an audio module (9), and a haptic module (10). The system predicts approaching movement paths and activates warnings before contact occurs. The' arrangement attaches to manual and powered wheelchairs without structural modification. The invention improves safety and comfort for users in crowded environments."
