Inventor(s) include Dr Sylvia Grace J; Mary Hillary J; Malini P; M. Miriyala Venkata Rama Laxmi; and Mahasri M.
The application for the patent was published on March 13, under issue no. 11/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The AI Based Medicine Expiry Detection Box is an intelligent healthcare assistance system designed to automatically monitor, detect, and alert users about expired and near-expiry medicines. Improper monitoring of medicine validity often leads to accidental consumption of expired drugs, resulting in reduced therapeutic effectiveness and potential health risks. This system aims to eliminate manual checking errors by integrating Artificial Intelligence, image processing, and smart notification technologies into a compact, user-friendly storage unit. The proposed system utilizes a camera module to scan medicine labels and extract expiry dates using Optical Character Recognition (OCR). The extracted data is processed through an AI algorithm that compares the expiry date with the current date in real time. Based on this analysis, the system categorizes medicines into valid, near-expiry, and expired groups. Visual indicators such as LED signals and an LCD display provide immediate status updates, while optional mobile application integration enables remote alerts and notifications. In addition to expiry tracking, the system maintains a digital inventory of stored medicines, reducing wastage and improving stock management efficiency. The smart box is particularly beneficial for households, pharmacies, hospitals, and rural healthcare centers where large quantities of medicines are handled regularly. By automating the monitoring process, the device enhances safety, minimizes human error, and promotes responsible medicine usage. The design emphasizes affordability, portability, and ease of operation, making it suitable for widespread adoption. The integration of AI ensures continuous learning capability, allowing improved accuracy in label recognition and data validation over time. Overall, the AI Based Medicine Expiry Detection Box represents an innovative step toward smart healthcare management, combining technology and safety to ensure timely usage and disposal of medicines while safeguarding public health."
