MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531129681 A) filed by Guru Nanak Institute Of Technology, Kolkata, West Bengal, on Dec. 20, 2025, for 'ai-assisted smart wheelchair with voice, gesture, and remote navigation.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A smart wheelchair system that enables adaptive multi-modal control for users with diverse mobility and speech capabilities is disclosed. The wheelchair integrates voice recognition, a gesture module comprising flex sensors and an accelerometer, and a manual joystick as input options processed by a microcontroller-based central processing unit. A firmware priority control manager monitors inputs concurrently and dynamically switches control authority according to availability and user-configurable priority. Ultrasonic sensors provide real-time obstacle detection and automatic stopping or rerouting to enhance safety. The system includes an H-bridge motor driver for bidirectional DC motor control, a rechargeable battery with battery management and voltage monitoring, wireless communication (Bluetooth or Wi-Fi) to a caregiver mobile application and a GPS module for real-time location tracking. Emergency stops, modular hardware design and OTA firmware updates are provided to support reliability, caregiver remote control and future upgrades."
