MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631059230 A) filed by Asansol Engineering College, Asansol, West Bengal, on May 9, for 'agto-driven retinal image enhancement: a bio-inspired optimization approach.'
Inventor(s) include Sumanta Karmakar; Dr. Jyotirmoy Chatterjee; Dr. Sambit S Mondal; and Mr. Rana Chakraborty.
The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a novel method and system for enhancing retinal image quality using an Artificial Gorilla Troops Optimizer (AGTO), a bio-inspired metaheuristic optimization algorithm. Retinal images are often degraded by noise, low contrast, and uneven illumination, which can hinder accurate diagnosis of ocular diseases. The proposed method employs AGTO to optimize image enhancement parameters by simulating the social behavior and movement patterns of gorilla troops. The process includes preprocessing of retinal images, initialization of candidate solutions representing enhancement parameters, and iterative optimization using a fitness function incorporating image quality metrics such as Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), and entropy. The optimized parameters are applied to perform contrast enhancement, noise reduction, and feature preservation, resulting in improved visibility of retinal structures such as blood vessels and lesions. The system further includes post-processing techniques for refinement of edges and reduction of artifacts. The proposed approach demonstrates improved performance, faster convergence, and enhanced diagnostic quality compared to conventional image enhancement techniques, making it suitable for applications in ophthalmic diagnosis, computer-aided detection systems, and telemedicine platforms."
