MUMBAI, India, Feb. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411093757 A) filed by National Institute Of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management, Sonipat, Haryana, on Nov. 29, 2024, for 'agri-food processing waste based plantable biodegradable food packaging film composition and method for preparation thereof.'

Inventor(s) include Agnihotri, Shekhar; Singh, Bhim Pratap; Vasishth, Ritu; and Oberoi, Harinder Singh.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 13, under issue no. 07/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention provides a biodegradable food packaging film derived from agri-food processing waste. The film is composed of biopolymeric materials including pectin, surface modified cellulose, and chitosan, without the use of plasticizers. The film is flexible, heat-sealable, printable, and offers moderate water vapor barrier and low oxygen barrier properties. The film incorporates bioactive compounds and natural citrus fragrances from spent solvents used during ingredient extraction. Seeds are embedded within the film, allowing for planting after use. The film extends the shelf life of fresh produce by up to 4 days while preventing microbial growth. The film is 100% compostable, with biodegradation accelerated by pre-treatment with citric acid. This packaging solution addresses environmental challenges by offering a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic packaging while reducing food waste and promoting a circular economy."
