MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641063348 A) filed by Vel Tech Rangarajan Dr. Sagunthala R&D Institute Of Science And Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, on May 19, for 'adaptive edge-ai railway coach safety and anti-smoking system.'
Inventor(s) include Dr. K. Raja; Monish. A. R; Dharshan. S; Viknesh. L; and Raja Rishikesh. S.
The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses an adaptive Edge-AI based railway coach safety and anti-smoking enforcement system configured to intelligently detect, classify, and respond to smoking-related hazards within railway coach compartments and lavatory environments. The system integrates smoke sensing modules, occupancy detection sensors, ultrasonic sensing units, an ESP32-based Edge-AI processing controller, relay-controlled ventilation units, solenoid-operated access regulation mechanisms, and wireless communication interfaces for real-time safety monitoring and automated hazard management. The Edge-AI controller performs adaptive multi-sensor fusion and intelligent smoke classification to distinguish cigarette smoke from non-hazardous environmental disturbances, thereby reducing false alarms and improving operational reliability. Upon confirmation of hazardous conditions, the system activates ventilation control, generates emergency notifications, regulates compartment access, and transmits alerts to authorized railway personnel through wireless communication platforms. The invention improves passenger safety, minimizes fire hazards, enhances anti-smoking enforcement, and enables intelligent railway-compatible environmental monitoring and predictive safety management."
