MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611024471 A) filed by Chandigarh University, Mohali, Punjab, on March 2, for 'a writing instrument with dual-magnet cap retention mechanism.'
Inventor(s) include Abhishek Ranjan; Dr. Saubhagya Ranjan Mahapatra; Manish Sudhakar Khodwe; Deepti; and Alisha Kalsi.
The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A writing instrument incorporating a magnetic self-closing cap retention mechanism is disclosed. The invention comprises a pen body and a cap body, each embedded with a permanent magnet arranged with mutually attracting polarities. When the cap is brought into proximity with the pen body, magnetic forces automatically align and draw the cap into a securely closed position, producing a distinct snap action that provides tactile and audible feedback to the user. The magnetic closure eliminates the need for friction-based or threaded cap mechanisms, thereby reducing mechanical wear and enhancing durability. The secure magnetic engagement forms an effective seal around the writing nib, minimizing air exposure and preventing ink drying. The cap can be easily removed with a gentle manual force while remaining resistant to accidental detachment during normal handling. The dual-magnet configuration ensures reliable alignment, consistent retention, and improved user convenience."
