MUMBAI, India, Feb. 27 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541110717 A) filed by Manipal Academy Of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, on Nov. 13, 2025, for 'a support cushion for hip spica cast placement and method thereof.'
Inventor(s) include Siddarth Kamath K; Hitesh Shah; and Kumar Amerendra Singh.
The application for the patent was published on Feb. 27, under issue no. 09/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a hip spica cushion designed to support paediatric patients during the application of hip spica casts. The cushion comprises a rigid base enclosed with cushioning layers and a waterproof outer covering, forming a stable, radiolucent, and sterilizable support surface. It is configured to be placed directly on an operating table, allowing the patient to remain in position throughout the procedure and eliminating the need for transfer to a separate hip spica table. This reduces intraoperative risks such as loss of reduction of the operated joint and accidental dislodgement of anaesthetic tubes. The cushion is lightweight, portable, reusable for several years, and can be easily manufactured from locally available materials at low cost. Its design allows intraoperative imaging without repositioning the patient, enabling safe, quick, and effective application of hip or shoulder spica casts, even with minimal assistance, thereby improving surgical efficiency and patient safety."
