MUMBAI, India, July 25 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202421005028 A) filed by Institute Of Technology, Nirma University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Jan. 24, 2024, for 'a process of manufacturing a sustainable concrete using calcium carbide residue.'

Inventor(s) include Dr Sonal Thakkar; Dr Urmil Dave; and Mr. Abhishek Chanda.

The application for the patent was published on July 25, under issue no. 30/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a process of manufacturing sustainable concrete using calcium carbide residue; wherein said calcium carbide residue (CCR) is utilized with varying percentages as a replacement for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) to achieve a compressive strength of up to 50-55 MPa at 28 days, comprising: substituting 5% to 20% of the OPC with CCR, utilizing 395 to 332 kg per m3 of cement, 1068 to 1100 kg per m3 of coarse aggregate, 636 to 600 kg per m3 of fine aggregate, adding polycarboxylic admixture as superplasticizer at a ratio of 1.5% of cementitious materials, maintaining a water-to-cementitious material ratio of 0.32 to 0.36. This utilizes industrial waste effectively without compromising the quality of concrete, thereby providing sustainable concrete, environment-friendly."
