MUMBAI, India, Feb. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202441044468 A) filed by Biovent Innovations Private Limited, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on Dec. 8, 2024, for 'a process for the production of prodigiosin.'

Inventor(s) include Dr. Shirly K. Thomas; Dr. Dhanyalekshmi C. S.; and Dr. Roshin Elizabeth George.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 13, under issue no. 07/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a natural red-coloured biopigment comprising the steps of inoculating the bacteria Serratia marcescens into a sterile culture medium using a solid-state fermentation method to obtain a crude product, followed by the collection and separation of the accumulated Prodigiosin solid-state fermentation product; wherein the solid-state fermentation medium comprises the following in mass ratios of, substrate (wheat bran flakes): 0.1-2 g, an inert substance (rice husk): 0.8 g, a carbon source (oil): 0.025-0.075ml, a nitrogen source (malt extract): 0.08-0.3g, an amino acid: 0.002-0.1g and, pH-adjusted water: 0.9-5ml."
