MUMBAI, India, Nov. 21 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202421059042 A) filed by Irfan Abdul Kadir Chikte; Sikandar Abdullah Modak; and Hitesh Suresh Pawar, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, on Nov. 5, 2024, for 'a process for production of bio-based oil absorbent and preparation thereof for oil spill control.'

Inventor(s) include Irfan Abdul Kadir Chikte; Sikandar Abdullah Modak; and Hitesh Suresh Pawar.

The application for the patent was published on Nov. 21, under issue no. 47/2025.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a simple and cost-effective process for production of bio-based oil absorbent for oil spill control. More specifically, the present invention provides a process for preparing a surface-modified benzylated biomass-based adsorbent powder for use as an oil spill absorbent, comprising the steps of preparing a slurry of biomass having size of 500 m to 5 mm in a polar aprotic organic solvent at a concentration of 2% w/v to 50% w/v, and reacting with an alkylating and/or benzylating agent having concentration in the range of 1% v/v to 10% v/v and aliphatic amine in the range of 1% v/v to 10% v/v with respect to the total weight of reaction mixture, at a temperature of 30 C to 200 C for a period of 30 minutes to 3 hour, followed by cooling and filtration to separate a solid surface-modified biomass cake from the mother liquor. The process further includes drying of cake at a temperature of 60 C to 80 C for at least 2 hours to obtain the dried surface-modified benzylated biomass-based adsorbent powder. The surface-modified benzylated biomass-based adsorbent powder of present invention exhibits a buoyancy between 98% to 100% and oil absorption capacity in the range of 1 to 50 times the weight of the dry powder. The use of agricultural and agro-industrial biodegradable waste materials provides economic and environmental approach towards production of oil absorbents."
