MUMBAI, India, March 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202621007049 A) filed by St. Vincent Pallotti College Of Engineering And Technology, Nagpur, Maharashtra, on Jan. 23, for 'a portable battery-operated handheld cutting machine for harvesting pigeon pea and chickpea crops.'

Inventor(s) include Tarwatkar, Prafull Madhukar; and Rothe, Jyoti Prashant.

The application for the patent was published on March 13, under issue no. 11/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a portable battery-operated handheld cutting machine for harvesting pigeon pea and chickpea crops. The device comprises a housing/body (1) ergonomically designed for single-hand operation, a DC electric motor (2) housed within the body and connected to a gear transmission assembly (3) that drives a rotary cutting blade assembly (4). Power is supplied via a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (5) controlled by a power switch (6). A protective guard (7) shields the operator from debris, while a handle and grip (8) ensure comfort and vibration reduction. Upon activation of the switch (6), motor (2) transmits torque through gear assembly (3) to rotate the blade (4), enabling clean severing of crop stems up to 8 mm in diameter at a speed of 800-1200 RPM. The machine is lightweight (1.5-2.5 kg), portable, cost-effective, and allows safe, fatigue-free harvesting, reducing labor requirements and improving field productivity."
