MUMBAI, India, July 11 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541050123 A) filed by Ramanujam Narayanan, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on May 25, for 'a novel elevated y-maze for cognitive evaluations in laboratory rodents.'
Inventor(s) include Ramanujam Narayanan.
The application for the patent was published on July 11, under issue no. 28/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A Y -maze is used to assess cognition (memory and learning) in laboratory rodents. In practice all Y maze are non-elevated that these mazes do not consider anxiety effects in mice or rats. In this patent, we develop and validate an elevated Y maze that assesses cognition without minimal effects on animal anxiety due to the elevation. Methods: A symmetrical elevated Y maze (50 centimeters in height) was developed and validated for mouse and rat cognition evaluation on Novelty Preference test and alteration test. Results: The NOR index as assessed with this novel elevated Y maze reorders the usual control values for this index at nearly 45% instead of 50% conventionally, accounting for anxiety effects at high altitude for the laboratory rodents tested. The rodents had exhibited quicker latencies to move in the maze as compared to the non-elevated Y maze design. Conclusion: The elevated Y maze was designed and validated with minimal anxiety effects during rodent cognitive assessment in the laboratory. This elevated design is advantageous over the conventional ground based design."
