MUMBAI, India, May 1 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611025970 A) filed by Noida Institute Of Engineering & Technology, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, on March 5, for 'a method for evaluating leaf extract of elaeocarpus ganitrus in stz induced diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy.'
Inventor(s) include Saumya Das; Priyanka Bansal; Harshita; Dr Avijit Mazumder; Dr Sharad Sharma; and Dr Salahuddin.
The application for the patent was published on May 1, under issue no. 18/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Disclosed herein is a method (100) for evaluating leaf extract of Elaeocarpus ganitrus in STZ-induced diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy involves procuring (102) fresh leaves from a cultivated source. The extract is concentrated (104) by solvent evaporation to yield a solvent-free mass, which is then subjected to preliminary qualitative phytochemical screening (106) to identify bioactive constituents. Diabetes is induced (108) in experimental models through intraperitoneal streptozotocin administration after high-fat diet feeding to establish nephropathy and retinopathy. The extract is administered (110) orally at predetermined doses to test groups, while a standard antidiabetic drug is given to a reference group. Physiological parameters such as body weight and blood glucose are monitored (112). Blood and tissues are collected (114) for biochemical evaluation, followed by histopathological examination (116) of kidney and eye tissues, and the data are analysed (118) to determine protective and therapeutic efficacy."
