MUMBAI, India, April 20 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411075006 A) filed by Amity University, Noida, Uttar Pradesh, on Oct. 4, 2024, for 'a method for agrobacterium-mediated transformation of s. quadricauda for enhanced algal biodiesel production.'

Inventor(s) include Chitralekha Nag Dasgupta; and Harshit Kumar Sharma.

The application for the patent was published on April 17, under issue no. 16/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a novel method for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of Scenedesmus quadricauda, a highly oleaginous alga, to enhance algal biodiesel production. Using the Agrobacterium 7 tumefaciens strain LBA4404 and the binary vector pBI121, the method introduces genetic material into S. quadricauda to improve lipid accumulation. The algae are cultured in Bold's Basal Medium and TAP medium, and transformation is achieved by co-cultivating with acetosyringone. Antibiotic sensitivity tests ensure effective selection. Successful transformation is verified by GUS gene expression analysis. This method offers a pioneering approach for genetic modification in S. 14 quadricauda, paving the way for improved algal biodiesel production and advancing research in algal biofuels."
