MUMBAI, India, Feb. 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641008388 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology, Hyderabad, Telangana, on Jan. 28, for 'a method and a system for real time sleep posture estimation using light detection and ranging.'

Inventor(s) include Nagarajan Ganapathy; Joydeep Banerjee; and Swarubini P J.

The application for the patent was published on Feb. 13, under issue no. 07/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present disclosure relates to relates to a method (700) and a system (100) for real time sleep posture estimation using Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). The method (700) includes emitting (702) light from a LiDAR system and detecting (704) the object of interest and collecting 3-dimensional data points. The method (700) further includes calculating (706) a tilt angle and a normal of the data points and correcting an angular distortion of the data points. Furthermore, the method (700) includes defining (710) a Region of Interest (ROI) in the data points by determining specific points and normalizing (712) a geometry of the ROI by calculating a centroid of the data points of the ROI. Lastly, the method (700) includes segmenting (714) out the normalized geometry of the ROI into a plurality of discrete sample points and sending the them for training and analyzing (716) the sample points to classify a real time sleep posture."
