MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541124567 A) filed by Sastra Deemed University, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, on Dec. 10, 2025, for 'a hydrogel membrane composition for age-related macular degeneration and method of fabrication thereof.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "A hydrogel membrane composition, for age related macular degeneration, and method of fabrication thereof, are disclosed. Said composition broadly comprises: thiol-modified hyaluronic acid; polyvinyl alcohol; and GAGA-YIGSR peptide nanofibers. Said thiol-modified hyaluronic acid and polyvinyl alcohol are in a ratio of about 1:1. The disclosed composition (and/or method) offers at least the following synergistic advantages and effects: cell counts comparable to DBM; promotes cell adhesion and proliferation; semi-invasive delivery approach; tight junction integrity, improved ion transport function, and polarisation capacity, closely mimicking the DBM control; leads to formation of a mature and functional RPE monolayer; and/or is suitable for retinal tissue engineering applications."
