MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641063501 A) filed by M. Kumarasamy College Of Engineering, Karur, Tamil Nadu, on May 20, for 'a gesture controlled bionic prosthetic hand with quick response and simplified finger mechanism.'

Inventor(s) include Mrs. M. Saratha; Mr. M. Jaganath; Divya Sri S; Agalya S; and Abinishasri B.

The application for the patent was published on May 29, under issue no. 22/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention discloses a Prosthetic Hand which is an advanced, context-aware bionic prosthetic designed to restore upper-limb functionality through intuitive spatial intelligence. Unlike traditional prosthetics that rely on complex EMG sensors or manual switches, this system utilizes a strategically placed MPU6050 Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) to detect the gravitational vector and orientation of the user's limb in real-time. By processing accelerometer and gyroscope data through an ESP32 microcontroller, the device autonomously maps the arm's position to three distinct functional "Action Zones": Power Grip for heavy objects, Precision Pinch for fine motor tasks, and Hook Grip for carrying loads. A key innovation in this system is the integration of a Haptic Feedback Loop via a micro-vibration motor. This motor provides tactile confirmation pulses to the user's residual limb, signaling the pre-selected mode before mechanical actuation occurs. This allows for "eyes-free" operation and reduces the cognitive load typically associated with prosthetic use. The mechanical architecture employs a high-torque, dual-servo tendon-driven system housed within a lightweight, 3D-printable chassis. This makes the technology highly scalable and affordable. By bridging the gap between low-cost mechanical hands and expensive neuro-prosthetics, the Aero-Gesture Hand provides a seamless, adaptive, and accessible solution for amputees, enabling a more natural and fluid interaction with the physical world."
