MUMBAI, India, May 29 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641063481 A) filed by Vellore Institute Of Technology, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, on May 19, for 'a front wheel for a wheelchair configured for ascending and descending obstacles in dual directions.'

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention relates to a front wheel for a wheelchair is disclosed, configured to enable efficient ascent and descent of obstacles in both rotational directions. The wheel comprises a central hub and a plurality of circumferential terrain-engaging units, each including an outer pad, an inner claw, and a flexible joint. Upon contact with an obstacle, the outer pad deforms to advance the inner claw into a gripping position, facilitating lifting or controlled lowering. The symmetrically arranged units provide continuous engagement with obstacles while maintaining a smooth rolling profile on flat surfaces. The wheel may be integrally formed for enhanced durability and repeated use to 6."
