MUMBAI, India, Jan. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202541122363 A) filed by Krupanidhi College Of Pharmacy; and Bochala Sarah Priyanka, Bengaluru, Karnataka, on Dec. 5, 2025, for 'a composition and method for antibacterial cotton pad with sustained release of syzygium cumini extract.'
Inventor(s) include Bochala Sarah Priyanka; Niya Rachel Kurien; and Kousalya Ripponpete Karibasappa.
The application for the patent was published on Jan. 2, under issue no. 01/2026.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "This invention relates to an antibacterial cotton pad designed for sustained release of Syzygium cumini seed extract. The pad comprises a cotton substrate with an absorbent fibrous matrix and is integrated with Syzygium cumini seed extract, which is rich in antibacterial polyphenolic compounds. In addition, the pad includes a natural polysaccharide binder such as gum acacia and citric acid, which serves as a crosslinking agent. During a heat curing step, the citric acid reacts with hydroxyl groups and phenolic groups present in both the cotton substrate and the extract to form ester bonds, thereby stabilizing a robust crosslinked composite network. The disclosed process involves seed extraction, binder solution preparation, immersion of the cotton substrate in the coating solution followed by pressing to remove excess solution, drying, and heat curing, ensuring effective antibacterial activity and uniform impregnation of the active components on the cotton substrate."
