MUMBAI, India, June 20 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202321085641 A) filed by Anusha Vyas, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on Dec. 15, 2023, for 'a biodegradable and compostable packaging material and method of producing the same.'
Inventor(s) include Anusha Vyas.
The application for the patent was published on June 20, under issue no. 25/2025.
According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "The present invention provides a biodegradable and compostable packaging material composed of extracted seaweed polysaccharides, natural fillers, plasticizers, additives, co-polymers, cross-linking agents, processing aids, and hydrophobic biopolymers, blended in a solvent. This material is capable of disintegrating within 10 to 150 days under real-life conditions, including varying temperature, humidity, salinity, and ph. The seaweed polysaccharide is primarily carrageenan derived from Kappaphycus alvarezii, with natural fillers like rice straw. The film is enhanced with bio-based plasticizers, additives, and co-polymers to improve its mechanical properties, water resistance, and process ability. The process for manufacturing the film involves the extraction of seaweed polysaccharides and fillers, followed by blending with other components, and forming the film through a solvent casting method. This packaging material is designed for sustainable applications, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic films, ensuring efficient biodegradation and compostability in home-composting environments."
