MUMBAI, India, April 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641016104 A) filed by Anagha P Vincent; P Vipin Kumar; B S Nishchith; S G Bubbly; and S B Gudennavar, Bengaluru, Karnataka, on Feb. 13, for 'a bifunctional device acting as high energy density and high power density zinc-ion supercapacitor as well as systemetric zinc-ion battery with zinc-ion intercalated hydrated v2o5 (zvoh).'

Inventor(s) include Anagha P Vincent; P Vipin Kumar; B S Nishchith; S G Bubbly; and S B Gudennavar.

The application for the patent was published on April 17, under issue no. 16/2026.

According to the abstract released by the Intellectual Property India: "Global dependency of energy storage systems is increasing rapidly, demanding technologies that are safer, environmentally friendly, cost-effective, easy to manufacture, and highly efficient. However, conventional energy storage systems often fail to meet these combined requirements. By introducing strategic modifications to existing systems, it is possible to develop next-generation energy storage devices that offer enhanced performance, safety, and sustainahility. Vanadium pentoxide (VzOs) is a promising electrode material for zinc family due to its layered structure and variable oxidation states. Because of its poor stability, zinc-ion intercalated hydrated V20s (ZVOH) material is synthesized by introducing both Zn2+ ions and structural water into the interlayers, enhancing stability and ion diffusion. Here ZVOH serves as a bifunctional electrode for both supercapacitor and battery applications. A high energy density (167.69 Wh kg-') and high power density ( 1600 W kg-') zinc-ion supercapacitor with capacitance of 471.63 F g-' is achieved at I A g-' using ZVOH as electrode material. This zincion supercapacitor also exhibited an excellent cyclic stability for 5000 cycles at 20 A g-'. The ZVOH electrode acted as both anode as well as cathode, showcasing good battery properties. The present invention also discloses a symmetric zinc-ion battery for the first time, that demonstrates a specific capacity of 103.69 mAh g-' at I A g-', with an operating window of 1.6 V and an exceptional cyclic stability up to 500 cycles at 20 A g-' with a capacity retention of61.3 %."
