Abstract: ABSTRACT “System and Method for Evaluating Coating-Specific Bipolar Plate-Gas Diffusion Layer Interfacial Characteristics” The present invention discloses a system (1000) and method for evaluating coating specific bipolar plate (BPP)-gas diffusion layer (GDL) interfacial characteristics. The method comprises preparing a baseline GDL specimen configuration and a coated BPP-GDL specimen configuration; positioning each specimen configuration between an upper platen (102) and a lower platen (104) of a compression assembly (100); applying a progressively controlled compressive load using a hydraulic actuator (106); synchronously measuring applied force using a load cell (110), hydraulic pressure using a pressure transmitter (120), instantaneous through-plane displacement using a displacement sensor (130), and electrical resistance using an electrical resistance measurement assembly (140); determining GDL compression from the displacement; calculating contact pressure from the applied force and an interfacial contact area; calculating interfacial contact resistance using baseline and coated-specimen electrical resistances; and correlating the contact pressure, GDL compression, and interfacial contact resistance to generate coating-specific interfacial characteristics of the coated bipolar plate.
