Abstract: Abstract A smart composite aircraft wing system incorporates an embedded, in-situ structural health monitoring (SHM) infrastructure and automated closed-loop structural optimization capabilities. The main wing body is fabricated from high-strength carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates enclosing a lightweight sandwich core. Monolithically embedded between the composite plies is a multi-modal sensor network—including fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors, piezoelectric patches, and MEMS accelerometers—positioned at critical regions to continuously measure internal strain, acoustic emissions, and dynamic vibrations. An onboard data acquisition unit filters and digitizes the sensor signals, routing them to an SHM processor that utilizes machine learning models to detect, classify, and locate subsurface structural damage by comparing active data with a healthy baseline. A structural optimization module employs genetic algorithms or particle swarm optimization coupled with finite element analysis to continuously refine design parameters, maximizing structural efficiency and safety while minimizing weight.
