Abstract: The present invention provides a standardized ethyl acetate extract obtained by Soxhlet extraction from authenticated leaves of Amaranthus tricolor Linn. (Amaranthaceae), a process for its preparation, and a pharmaceutical composition comprising the same for management of cognitive impairment associated with Alzheimer's disease. The extract is characterized by the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, proteins, amino-acids, saponins and tannins, and is standardized using an HPTLC fingerprint with rutin as a marker at about 107.65 microgram per 100 milligram of extract. The extract is non-toxic up to 2000 mg/kg orally in rats and produces, at oral doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg, significant reversal of scopolamine-induced amnesia in Morris Water Maze and Novel Object Recognition tests, significant inhibition of brain acetylcholinesterase and significant restoration of brain glutathione, the higher dose being comparable to piracetam, thereby providing a multi-target nootropic phyto-medicament.
