Abstract: The present invention relates to a FPGA-based Free Space Optical (FSO) communication system and method configured for adaptive high-speed optical wireless communication under varying atmospheric conditions. The system comprises an optical transmitter including a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) configured to perform selectable M-ary Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (M-QAM), a LASER driver coupled to a LASER diode for optical signal transmission, a controlled environmental testbed for simulating atmospheric disturbances including fog, rain, drizzle, humidity, airflow, temperature variation, and ambient illumination, and an optical receiver having a photosensitive detector and signal conditioning circuitry. A Deep Neural Network (DNN)-based prediction module receives real-time environmental parameter data and predicts adaptive transmission parameters including modulation order and optical transmission power. Based on the predicted parameters, the FPGA and LASER driver dynamically adjust modulation and transmission characteristics to maintain reliable communication performance under changing atmospheric conditions. The DNN model is trained using experimentally collected signal data and analytically derived Málaga-M fading channel performance parameters including outage probability, symbol error rate, and channel capacity. The invention provides improved communication reliability, spectral efficiency, and adaptive atmospheric compensation for next-generation Free Space Optical communication systems. Fig 1 to 4.
