Abstract: The present invention relates generally to outdoor illumination and electrical energy-management systems. More particularly, the invention relates to an automatic street-lighting system configured to control the illumination level of one or more streetlights using information obtained from a plurality of environmental sensors. The invention specifically concerns a sensor-fusion-based street-lighting arrangement that evaluates ambient light, presence or movement of road users, traffic conditions, atmospheric visibility, weather conditions and sensor-operating reliability to determine an appropriate illumination profile for individual streetlights or groups of streetlights. The invention is applicable to public roads, highways, residential streets, industrial areas, institutional campuses, parking areas, pedestrian pathways, bridges, tunnels, smart-city infrastructure and other outdoor areas requiring energy-efficient and safety-responsive illumination.
