Abstract: Road safety in school zones remains a critical concern due to frequent incidents of over speeding vehicles that endanger children and pedestrians. This work proposes the concept of an intelligent vehicle speed detection and alert system designed specifically for school zones using infrared (IR) sensor technology and embedded control mechanisms. The proposed system aims to detect the movement of vehicles, estimate their speed based on the time taken to travel between strategically placed sensors, and compare the calculated speed against a predefined speed limit. When a vehicle exceeds the permissible limit, the system is envisioned to provide immediate visual and audible warnings through a display unit and alert mechanism, thereby encouraging driver compliance and enhancing safety. The proposed solution seeks to offer a low-cost, non-intrusive, and easily deployable alternative to conventional speed monitoring systems, making it suitable for educational institutions and other pedestrian- sensitive areas.
